The Rheingrün Open Air festival is an electro and techno event which takes place annually near the German city of Karlsruhe, with international DJs on the bill and located at the Rappenwört Rhine Beach. To meet the needs of 2024’s expanded event capacity, regular event service provider MKM Event Show Technik GmbH deployed a Coda Audio CiRay system on the main stage for the first time.

Coda Audio CiRay (dual 10’’ 3-way) is the third and latest addition to Coda’s VCA family of compact line array loudspeakers, joining the original ViRay (dual 8’’) and flagship AiRay (dual 12’’). On the main stage at Rheingrün Open Air, MKM deployed main hangs totalling of 16 CiRays at 90° and eight CiRays at 120°, supplemented by two Hops8s (high output point sources) for outfill, and 18 TiRays (compact 2-way line arrays) for nearfill.

Twenty-one SCPs (dual 18’’) sensor controlled subwoofers took care of the low end. Eight ViRays at 80° and four ViRays at 120° acted as delays, with a further six ViRays at 80° and two SCP subs for monitoring. The system was powered by four Linus T-Racks (12-channel racks) and two Linus M-Racks (compact 4-channel racks).

Using the CiRay, “we were able to offer homogeneous coverage across the entire festival area”, says system technician Daniel Vollrath. “The maximum volume level of 99 dB was kept stable and the system still had plenty of headroom.”

The festival’s party area, Stage 2, was housed in a tent and also equipped with a Coda Audio system. A short-notice reconfiguration of the stage layout meant that MKM had to re-configure its original plan, as Vollrath explains: “The stage was originally supposed to be at the front but had to be moved to the long side of the tent. It actually benefitted us because it meant we could safely do without a delay line. Coda’s G-Series proved to be the optimal choice for the tent shows.”

The system for Stage 2 comprised four G715-Pros and four G712-Pros (15’’ and 12’’ 3-way multipurpose point sources, respectively) with three SCP sensor controlled subwoofers and ten SCV-F (compact 18’’) subwoofers. Two Cue-One (3-way high-output) stage monitors and two SCF-V subs took care of monitoring. The system was powered by a single Linus M-Rack and a single Linus-10C 4-channel system amplifier.
