LightingEurope calls on the EU to maintain the level of ambition set by MEP Schaldemose’s draft DSA report

The Digital Services Act (DSA) is the EU’s opportunity to upgrade the rules for eCommerce and make them fit for today’s reality. The eCommerce Directive was drafted twenty years ago, today eCommerce represents a substantial market which has grown even more with the current pandemic.

 

“The expectation of Europe’s lighting industry is that the EU finally addresses the unchecked availability of non-compliant products online and clearly allocates liability to an economic operator within the EU jurisdiction”, says Ourania Georgoutsakou, Secretary General of LightingEurope. “We very much welcome MEP Schaldemose’s proposals to finally close this legal gap, which the European Commission’s draft text did not address.”

 

“Products available online must apply with all EU rules”, continues Georgoutsakou. “We must allocate lability not just for product safety, but for all product requirements, e.g. when a product does not satisfy ecodesign or energy labelling rules, or does not contribute to waste recovery and recycling fees. The EU legal framework must prevent the listing and/or re-listing of non-compliant products and making them available to EU customers.”

 

LightingEurope calls on Members of the European Parliament and the Council to maintain this level of ambition throughout the negotiation process. LightingEurope will continue to assess the proposed amendments to the DSA and places its technical expertise at the disposal of EU institutions to help shape these new measures and create a fair and effective regulatory and business environment.
