Pristine speech intelligibility keep concert audience engaged

From their home offices in Brooklyn, NY, Fool’s Gold Records is an independent record label that has established itself with releases bridging the worlds of hip-hop and electronic music, introducing artists like Kid Sister, Danny Brown, Kid Cudi, and Duck Sauce. The label is best known for its annual series of Day Off concerts across the US and Canada and, just recently, the company sponsored a shindig in the greater Miami area. This concert featured hip hop recording artist Vic Mensa, DJ A-Trak, and Rap artist Mike Floss—all of whom performed through a potent sound reinforcement system drawn from the Aero Series 2 catalog of Valencia, Spain-based D.A.S. Audio.

Rental Stages of Hollywood, FL which specializes in a wide range of staging, lighting, sound, and supporting equipment for concerts and special events, was contracted to provide logistical support for the Day Off concert. Jamie Mardis, the company’s president, sound designer, and production manager, recently purchased a substantial sound system setup consisting of D.A.S. Audio’s newly introduced Aero 20A powered line arrays and UX-221A powered subwoofers. This equipment was used at the Day Off event. He discussed his experience with the new sound system.

“The Miami concert took place on Sunday, September 13th at Wynwood Village,” Mardis reports. “For this particular concert, we flew six D.A.S. Aero 20A line array elements for the left and right sides of the stage area. For low end support, we used eight UX-221A ultra low frequency subwoofers, which were positioned in a staggered center position setup.”

The Aero 20A is a compact line array system which incorporates D.A.S. Audio’s ALAS™ philosophy and draws from the success of the company’s Aero 12A. The powered Aero 20A incorporates the company’s latest technical achievements in transducer design, power electronics, and system management. This includes the newly developed 12AN4 loudspeaker, an improved M-75N compression driver, and a re-designed HF waveguide along with the quick-rig system for easy rigging and stacking. Equally notable, the D.A.S. UX-221A sub bass system incorporates dual 21-inch neodymium transducers with 6-inch voice coils for ultra-low sound delivery.

When queried about those attributes of the D.A.S. Aero 20A and UX-221A enclosures that made them so well suited for the Day Off project, Mardis offered the following thoughts. “With their new titanium drivers, the Aero 20A’s deliver exceptional vocal clarity and outstanding music reproduction qualities,” he said. “I was also very impressed with the new rigging hardware. It’s easy to use and saves quite a bit of time when flying the system. The UX-221A subwoofers are also really impressive. They have great power for their size and the low end performance is terrific.”

Mardis was equally enthusiastic about his experience with D.A.S. Audio’s customer and technical support services. “D.A.S. customer service has been awesome,” says Mardis. “From system design to implementation, they have been there for us the entire way. It was very gratifying to have this level of support to help us get up and running with our new system.”

With the first project using their new sound system under their belts, Mardis was enthusiastic about the gear, his relationship with D.A.S., and prospects for his company’s business, “The Aero 20A line arrays and UX-221A subwoofers enable us to offer our customers a one stop shop that includes state-of-the-art sound reinforcement capabilities.
